Next week there’s a so-called book-sprint at V2_, and a team with a.o. Michael Dieter, Nat Muller and David Berry will have a week to write a book on, I think, politics and the new aesthetics.

Interesting, but I’m not sure I agree with either of them. Harman is clearly not a political philosopher – did anybody assume he was? OOO is very much hardcore ontology (in the hands of Meillasoux or Harman), and sometimes pretty hard to grasp in its theoretical rigour (for a non-professional who hasn’t got a proper understanding of, for instance, Husserl) – and that is where it becomes interesting. It’s made easy-going and simple sometimes, especially on all the blogs, but that is where I get uncomfortable…
Something like that… I’d need a day to properly explain. And well, I do not have that day.

Enjoying this (and following): Erkki Kurenniemi (In 2048) (preliminary works toward) an online archive. A project by Constant (in this case Michael Murtaugh & Nicolas Malevé) about Kurenniemi’s enourmous digital archive – and it’s part of Documenta 13.
(As you might know Kurenniemi, the Finnish pioneer of electronic music and much more – and the only man I’ve heard declaring with full seriousness that we have to migrate to outer space and without sounding silly – has been documenting his personal life since a very long time.)

Leesvoer, leesvoer. Nee, ik downloadde public domain-boeken via Amazon – ze sturen je daarvoor zelfs een factuur a 0,00 dollars of euro’s – e-pubs te lezen in je Kindle-reader-for-mac (of in the cloud), te tracken door Amazon. Maar goed, ik probeer weer eens een goede elektronische leesomgeving te vinden (of te maken) voor dat materiaal, maar ben nog altijd niet tevreden (en helemaal niet over de toegang van Amazon tot mijn computer).
Wat zegt het, een overzicht van uitgelezen boeken. De meeste leestijd besteedde ik aan onderzoek, van website naar pdf naar wiki, soms scannend, op zoek, soms artikelen lezend. Maar goed. Deze boeken las ik:
François Villon: Verzamelde gedichten, in de briljante vertaling van Ernst van Altena. Ik had wel eens een paar stukjes Villon gelezen, maar nooit ‘alles’. Misschien kwam het door alle boeken over de vroege jaren tachtig, waardoor ik gevoeliger was voor Villon’s toon en ‘outlook-on-life’? Ze zijn inderdaad scherp – die gedichten. Pfff.
Ik las ook wat Petrarca, uit het Liedboek, vertaling van Peter Verstegen, maar met het Italiaans ernaast. Om iets te begrijpen van het begin van de ‘subjectieve’ lyriek.
En ik las de Penguin Classis Ibn Fadlan and the Land of Darkness. Arab Travellers in the Far North, een bloemlezing met de volledige vertaling van Ibn Fadlan’s reis naar het ‘verre noorden’ (wat toch niet zo heel ver noordelijk is, Ibn Fadlan kwam tot Kazan). Dat is een belangrijke bron voor onze kennis over de Vikingen (ook wat betreft de Vikingen als getatoueerde, groepseks-bedrijvende woestelingen met vreselijke rituelen – dingen die zo goed als nergens in de saga’s voorkomen, en die veel doen denken aan duistere Vikingen uit computergames). (Ibn Fadlan is overigens in zijn tekst zeer objectief en feitelijk). Verder de reis van Abu Hamid al-Andalusi al-Gharnati, en fragmenten van veel, veel andere Arabische schrijvers.
Ah, en ik las eindelijk Graham Harman’s filosofische ‘mythes’ (over onder andere een reuzenrad en een boorplatform) waarmee hij zijn visie op het ‘object’ kracht probeert bij te zetten: Circus Philosophicus.
Vrijdag 23 maart in de Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam: een conferentie over het maken van e-boeken, Boek uit de band, georganiseerd door o.a. het Institute of Network Cultures. Ik zal er verslag van doen – quasi live. Dat wordt een dag simultaan ingespannen luisteren, instant reflecteren en als een bezetene tikken. Ik kijk er naar uit.
(Ik ben benieuwd of ik iets ‘nieuws’ te horen zal krijgen… In de 20 jaar dat ik de wereld van de e-boeken volg – sinds Voyager cd-roms, e-publicaties op diskette, gopher-archieven en vroege multimedia (of sinds mn Mac SE en daarna Powerbook 100 met 2400 bauds modem) heb ik steeds opnieuw dezelfde argumenten (en vergezichten) gehoord. Het gebruik en de verspreiding van de technologie veranderde, de machines ook, de argumenten bleven grotendeels gelijk. Ik ben het grotendeels eens met wat Florian Cramer vorig jaar zei, tijdens The Unbound Book 2011: Sober genealogies of the (un)bound. (Met PDF, en de video staat ook ergens bij Vimeo).
Ah, epub is so ‘1986’… (dat is niet per se slecht overigens).

Essays van Robert Darnton over geschiedenis en toekomst van het boek, de helft over Google Book search – de meeste had ik al eens in een soms iets andere versie gelezen (in de NYTRB bijv.). Fijn om te (her)lezen, niets nieuws, wel alles weer eens op een rijtje, helder beargumenteerd. Een ‘quick read’ voor een uurtje in de trein en twee uurtjes thuis. Darnton combineert zeer specialistische kennis met een breed geïnformeerd, multiperspectivisch overzicht, en brengt de heikele issues (waar we nog steeds mee zitten) duidelijk voor het voetlicht.
One festival just over (Sonic Acts XIV), next one coming up (DEAF2012). For Sonic Acts I am curating/organising/editing/making-it-happen. I am involved in DEAF2012 in so far that I am working at V2_ where the DEAF-team is getting the festival together. That’s way more relaxed, psychologically; but we (read: the archive of V2_) might do a small thing too (to be confirmed). Website is here: www.deaf.nl. Tomorrow, a special programme on the Concertzender featuring the music of Michel Waisvisz, with totally unknown recordings which were recently found in his ‘archive’ (well, in this metal cupboard in his studio, which was full of tapes, paper, floppy disks and electronics). Gisteren was de boekpresentatie van Rosa Menkman’s boek over glitch, en de opening van de tentoonstelling bij Planetart. (Ik was er even met R. die zich uitstekend vermaakte bij al die flikkerende schermen).
