Tot mijn verrassing gaat het nieuwste nummer van De Witte Raaf (153 – vandaag nog niet online) helemaal over de archeologie van de computer. Met o.a. een vertaling van Kittler’s essay over Turing, Dirk van Hulle over ‘digitaal kladwerk’, Brams & Pultaü spreken Jef Cornelis over de aflevering van IJsbreker met Luc Steels, Raaijmakers, Struycken en Peter Beyls en – grootste verrassing – excerpten uit Daniel Robberechts’ Mac-dagboek 1986-1987.

Pierre Schaeffer’s aanzetten tot een theorie van de radio, ‘les arts-relais’, geschreven rond 1942, jaren voor hij grondlegger werd van de Musique Concrete, lang, lang voor zijn theoretische werk over ‘l’objet sonore’. Iets tussen een fenomenologie en een semiotiek van de radio, ook vooruitlopend op de theorieën van Abraham Moles.

Zeer mooi uitgegeven boekje. Ik kocht het toen ik in maart in Parijs was. En ik doe mn best om het te begrijpen. Dat gaat nog redelijk, gezien mijn kennis van het Frans.

Nog meer leesvoer & onderzoek: Programmed Visions. Software and Memory (2011) van Wendy Chun – een kritische cultureel-technische geschiedenis van het begrip software. Eerste deel gelezen. Helder. Jammer dat ik geen tijd heb om me er echt in te verdiepen – en een kritiek te schrijven.

Meer leesvoer: Larry Austin & Douglas Kahn’s: Source Music of the Avant-garde, 1966–1973. Een keuze uit de elf issues van Source. “The journal Source: Music of the Avant-garde was and remains a seminal source for materials on the heyday of experimental music and arts. Conceived in 1966 and published to 1973, it included some of the most important composers and artists of the time: John Cage, Harry Partch, David Tudor, Morton Feldman, Robert Ashley, Pauline Oliveros, Dick Higgins, Nam June Paik, Steve Reich, and many others.”

A small and short book, but I like small and short books: Bruno Latour & Vincent Antonin Lépinay’s The Science of Passionate Interests. An Introduction to Gabriel Tarde’s Economic Anthropology, published in 2009. Very interesting and stimulating, though I am not 100% sure I have really understood Tarde’s revolutionary approach to economy, yet.

Een klein boekje, maar ik hou wel van kleine en korte boekjes: Bruno Latour & Vincent Antonin Lépinay’s The Science of Passionate Interests. An Introduction to Gabriel Tarde’s Economic Anthropology uit 2009. Las het gisteren, stimulerend & erg interessant al weet ik niet of ik Tarde’s benadering van economie nu werkelijk heb doorgrond. Zou het nog eens moeten lezen, maar daarvoor is geen tijd.

“Let us remember that, for Tarde, there is no infrastructure, no automatism, no harmony; there are no natural laws, no laws of development; everything rests on artifice and inventions facilitated, coordinated, simplified, gathered and assembled by the measuring instruments which feed the economic discipline and which spread out from the metrological chains. It is only throught the spreading of instruments that the social is rendered both quantifiable and predictable to itself, through a powerful process of reflexivity.” (p. 77/78)

There were only a few names that were familiar to me in Lo-tech and Hi-tech and that’s good, I’m all for discovering new artists. On tuesday I interviewed Cesar Harada – I’m editting the text now, it will be published on the V2_website. Cesar Harada is working with his team on Protei, an unmanned sailing boat for cleaning up oil spills. He’s an energetic, humble guy who’s doing impressive work.

Gleick’s book has an epilogue entitled “The Return of Meaning,” expressing the concerns of people who feel alienated from the prevailing scientific culture. The enormous success of information theory came from Shannon’s decision to separate information from meaning. His central dogma, “Meaning is irrelevant,” declared that information could be handled with greater freedom if it was treated as a mathematical abstraction independent of meaning. The consequence of this freedom is the flood of information in which we are drowning. The immense size of modern databases gives us a feeling of meaninglessness. Information in such quantities reminds us of Borges’s library extending infinitely in all directions. It is our task as humans to bring meaning back into this wasteland. As finite creatures who think and feel, we can create islands of meaning in the sea of information.
